Mathews Archery moves to employee ownership

Founder Matt McPherson stays on as CEO and chief engineer as the Wisconsin bow maker becomes employee-owned, with no change to day-to-day operations.

Mathews Archery has announced its transition to employee ownership, a move the company says will protect its long-term values while giving its employees a stake in its future success.

Founded by Matt McPherson in 1992, Mathews has become one of archery’s best-known premium bow brands, with target and hunting bows designed and built in Sparta, Wisconsin, and sold through independent retailers worldwide.

McPherson will remain CEO and chief engineer, working with the existing leadership team. The company says the move will not alter day-to-day operations, leadership or its commitment to retailers and customers.

“From the beginning, I’ve always believed that people come first, and business comes second,” said McPherson. “Becoming employee-owned is a natural extension of that belief and gives the people who have poured so much into Mathews the opportunity to share in its future success.”

Mathews said the transition is intended to preserve its focus on innovation, product development and the independent retail network that supports the brand internationally.

The employee-ownership model also reinforces the company’s stated long-term commitment to the archery community, as it continues to develop premium equipment for hunting and target archers.
