Rivolier acquires historic French arms maker Verney-Carron

French distribution group Rivolier has confirmed its acquisition of Verney-Carron, the last remaining industrial-scale firearms manufacturer in France. Based in Saint-Étienne since 1820, Verney-Carron is a long-standing symbol of French gunmaking heritage. The transaction, validated by the Commercial Court, follows a competitive takeover bid designed to preserve local jobs and manufacturing capabilities.
The acquisition marks a major step in Rivolier’s transition from a pure distributor to an industrial player with manufacturing capabilities. Best known as a leading French distributor of hunting, sporting and defense equipment, Rivolier has recently expanded its portfolio through the acquisition of drone specialist Hexadrone. Verney-Carron becomes the group’s first large-scale industrial entity.
In order to support its industrial ambitions, Rivolier is forming strategic alliances with two major European manufacturers: Steyr Arms of Austria and AREX Defense of Slovenia. Steyr brings over 160 years of arms manufacturing expertise, including the globally recognised Steyr AUG rifle, while AREX Defense is known for its innovative handgun platforms and modular systems, with a growing footprint across NATO markets and beyond.
Rivolier has pledged to:
– Preserve as many jobs as possible at Verney-Carron’s historical site
– Renew and modernise its hunting and defense firearm lines
– Build a strong international presence for Verney-Carron products
– Invest in R&D and innovation to revitalise the brand
– Leverage its marketing and financial strength to drive growth
To support international growth, Rivolier has also brought in Czech investment group RSBC, which will take a 35% minority stake in the project. RSBC already holds ownership stakes in Steyr Arms and AREX Defense, giving Rivolier access to a well-aligned industrial network.
As of 31 December 2024, the Rivolier Group reported consolidated revenues of €130 million, operating profit of €10 million, and a workforce of 281 employees based entirely in France.
This acquisition represents a new chapter for one of Europe’s oldest gunmakers and signals Rivolier’s intent to become a vertically integrated player capable of shaping the future of the European firearms sector.
