In conversation with…Stephen Roe
Gun Trade World caught up with Daniel Technologies’ strategic director, Stephen Roe, to find out more about his growing business.
Q. What are your key objectives at SHOT Show?
A. Check out what’s new to market, emerging technology relating to fabrics and ballistic hardware; it’s constantly changing to comply with international standards and requirements and we need to be on top of our game.
Q. How important is SHOT Show for your business?
A. We try and send at least one representative every year to attend not just the show but education seminars. For example, the Law Enforcement Education Program (LEEP) was essential for anyone in the LE sector; the Industry Range Day is also a fantastic opportunity to experience and future-proof product lines for consideration.
Q. What are your key business objectives for 2020?
A. Simple strategy; keep developing our footprint into new and emerging markets which are outside of traditional LE sector. We have enjoyed some success in the aviation and medical sectors in 2019, our intention is to aggressively retain and sustain this growth.
Q. Is your business growing and, if so, by how much?
A. Yes but not quick enough! I’d like to start enjoying it...
Q. What business changes have you made to ensure future growth?
A. We recruited in the second quarter of 2019 to ensure we had a dedicated team focusing on specific markets off interest. You’re nothing without good people in the building.
Q. What are the key brands that you work with and why are their products so successful?
A. We have a very extensive and mission specific range of brands. There is no unique tradecraft as to why they work well together; you have to ensure the method used in developing a brand from inception to delivery is that they don’t compete and identify their core strengths. You are always going to have highs and lows with your partners; it has to be a mutual long-term relationship if a project is to succeed.
We are very fortunate than some of partners like ASP, Safariland, Fiocchi and Leupold have worked with Daniel Technologies since we established in 2002. This confirms the commitment and trust to achieve our mutual goals.
Q. Where do you see the sector in five years’ time?
A. There are so many answers. We are in a process of ‘tier one’ industry leaders purchasing competitors and this is leading to some product categories within sectors of the industry compounding. We are seeing severe regulation, which at times is unnecessary and detrimental to bottom line business costs.
If any business, regardless of sector within the industry, is not now in the process of adapting their model to prepare for the next five years, then change is going to hit them very hard.
Daniel Technologies is also open to new start-ups within the industry seeking investment and project management. We have the right team to support a project within the industry and are always looking for ways to broaden our own footprint with the sector.
Q. What products are you excited about?
A. The B&T APC9-K 9x19mm is certainly a game changer with regard to future selection by any intimate SF Unit looking to replace aging SMG’s.
This is an off the shelf RTD “Ready to Deploy” weapon, fully equipped with Aimpoint TL optic, sling & 30rd magazines. It’s also available in a SD (Suppressed) configuration if required. The real bonus for Daniel Technologies is availability of a FX Simunition model from B&T which will support Scenario Training for end users.
The Swiss manufactured weapon was recently selected to replace HK MP-5’s in United States Army inventory.
